Are you ready to strike it rich this summer? Head west to Idaho Springs for a tour of The Mighty Argo. Our mill and tunnel played a major role in the Colorado Gold Rush, and now it is a one-of-a-kind attraction that offers visitors a chance to go back in time to this integral part of American history.
There are plenty of summer break activities in the mountains, why not take the historical route?
The Argo Mill & Tunnel
The Argo was built in 1893 and reigned as one of the most significant mills in the area during the gold rush. Today, visitors can take a guided tour of the mill and see the original equipment and machinery used to extract gold from ore. You’ll learn about the process of crushing and refining ore while catching a glimpse of miner life in the late 19th century.
But the fascination doesn’t stop there. When you head to the 4.2-mile-long tunnel—in which only a small portion is accessible due to a water control system—you’ll learn how it was used to transport ore from nearby mines for processing. This portion of the tour allows you to walk in the footsteps of history: despite the everyday dangers of the job, the pursuit of wealth during the gold rush continued to prosper.
Toward the end of the tour, you’ll walk through the museum area that features exhibits on the history of the gold rush and the Mercantile to purchase souvenirs. But the best has yet to come…
Gold panning is included with all tour tickets! With the help of an experienced guide, you’ll learn how to pan for gold and separate it from the other materials in the paydirt. It is a thrilling experience that will make you feel like a real prospector. And who knows? You may just strike it rich!
